About the award

The Young Creative Entrepreneur (YCE) Music Award recognises innovators in the international music business, highlighting the importance of entrepreneurs in driving forward the development of an independent, sustainable industry around the world. Run by the British Council, the programme identifies the next generation of leaders of the international music business and links them to theUKfor future business and cultural collaboration.  International winners are chosen through a selection process by the British Council and partners around the world, and all take part in a trip to build contacts with the UK; curated group meetings to give an overview of key industry issues, peer networking, access to senior UK industry figures, and attendance at The Great Escape festival and conference.

 Since 2006, 40 young music entrepreneurs from more than 20 countries have taken part in the award, building an active alumni network in the process, seeing the creation of new festivals, conferences, and bands travelling between theUK, Europe,India,Brazil,Chinaand beyond.

Craig Patton, the Managing Director, Business Development at R/GA was invited as a guest speaker to share his entrepreneurial experience and ideas, how to succeed in the future of digital and interactive sector. Ernests Štāls, the finalist of IYIE 2010 Award also shared his learning points he acquired during the UK interactive industry tour. In fact, Ernests was very impressed by the work and ideas of Craig Patton during this tour which leaded him to invite Craig for this event.

Who is Craig Patton?

A seasoned executive with more than 15+ years in digital media and emerging technologies arena, Craig has been at the forefront of interactive communications in the mobile, internet and interactive television markets.

Currently working with R/GA – Interpublic Group’s multi-award winning Agency for the Digital Age – to grow their business internationally, he brings his experience of pioneering the use of interactive channels to drive the emergence of a innovative, more personal and relevant marketinging solutions for clients like Nike, Nokia, Aston Martin, O2 Avaya, Johnson & Johnson, PepsiCo, amongst others.

Previous roles have included time spent with a number of Omnicom’s digital agencies (agency.com, oyster, i-traffic, Organic, Agency Republic, and ipsh! amongst those); Neven Vision – a mobile biometric/facial recognition technology provider (acquired by Google); and Flytxt – a mobile marketing and technology provider (restructured, a portion of which was sold to Buongiorno).

He got his start in the internet and mobile industry as the business development director for Clarity IBD which was acquired by Proxicom in 2000 (subsequently acquired by Dimension Data a year later).

This event hopes to share the experiences of a wide range of professionals working within this sector, exploring case studies and successful business models, offering an insight into financing, trends and development within the digital industry.

To help identify the creative industries in Ho Chi Minh City and their potential to contribute to the country’s wealth, Mr. Richard Naylor, Head of Research of B.O.P. consultant Co. and Ms Vanessa Swan, CEO, Cockpit Arts  London, flew to HCMC as key speakers of the programme. Mr. Tu Minh Thien, Director of HCMC ITPC said, “Our initial study shows that Ho Chi Minh City has the potential to develop creative industries. We hope that after the training, we will be able to do more activities to develop the industries.”

We are delighted to bring  news that Plumen 001 created by design brand Hulger has won this year’s Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award. Plumen 001 is an energy saving lightbulb of an unconventional looping shape designed by  Samuel Wilkinson.

Plumen 001 uses 80% less energy and lasts 8 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

Creative Hotspots is a one day event exploring new business models in the creative industries, including IT, new media, fashion, design, film and music. It will take place in Tallinn, Estonia on 24 March 2011.

Another Young Creative Entrepreneur Club (YCE Club) networking event took place on 10th of February, 2011 at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.

Martin Elbourne, one of the main bookers for Glastonbury Festival, creative director and co founder of the Great Escape in Brighton and Nigel Templeman, manager at Supervision Management that roster includes amongst others, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, White Lies, We Have Band, As Tall As Lions, e.t.c were invited to share their experiences and expertise related to music industry conferences and showcase events with Latvia’s music industry representatives and musicians.

M. Elbourne explained the structure and essence of the music industry conferences and showcase festivals while N. Tempeman examined those from the manager’s point of view and shared the knowledge what tools are necessary  for the successful participation and how to make most of it.

“Of course Great Britain is known as the hub of the music industry in Europe and worldwide as many excellent music talents and bands come from there. But moreover it is also a country, where music and entertainment industries contribute significantly to the overall economic growth. In our opinion Latvia also has a large growth potential in the music industry, but it is highly important that experts and entrepreneurs of this sector focus not only on creativity, but also develop skills like risk taking, facing new challenges and have a broader, international outlook. Young Creative Entrepreneurs Programme provides entrepreneurs with essential skills and offers networking opportunities both within Latvia and with the United Kingdom as well as internationally,” concludes Maija Ūdre, British Council Latvia Young Creative Entrepreneurs Programme manager.
